Leading the operations of the medical imaging department and corporate management responsibilities for the Joint Department of Medical Imaging (JDMI), the Senior Director, Medical Imaging provides energetic, visionary and strategic operational leadership that fosters quality patient care delivery and effective resource management.  This role is accountable and responsible for all clinical and administrative functions related to patient care delivery within medical imaging for University Health Network (UHN), and collaborates with senior medical imaging leaders at Sinai Health (SH) and Women’s College Hospital (WCH) - the other two partners in JDMI.

The Senior Director is an integral part of the executive program leadership, reporting to the Vice President Clinical, Diagnostic, Imaging and Lab Medicine and works closely with the Radiologist-in-Chief and the medical and administrative leadership roles within JDMI. 

Duties

Planning and Operational Leadership

  • Maintains responsibility, in partnership with imaging directors at SH and WCH for the effective and efficient operational management of the Medical Imaging department.
  • Provide senior leadership for clinical operations collaborating in a shared governance model.
  • Determines overall strategic direction and annual goals and objectives for the clinical operations of the department that are aligned with the vision of the hospital.
  • Influence and support JDMI’s research and innovation strategies through IT, research, education and clinical change management
  • Provides strategic leadership with provincial funders including the Ministry of Health and Ontario Health, including agencies such as Cancer Care Ontario.

Human Resource Management 

  • Manages program and department human resources
  • Provides senior leadership to management of human resources of all technologists, nursing, administrative and other clinical support staff at UHN and in partnership with imaging directors at SH and WCH through the clinical management leadership structure.
  • Determines HR strategy and executes appropriate staffing mode.

Financial and Asset Management

  • Manages medical imaging financial resources at UHN and in partnership with imaging director.
  • Determines resource allocation based on clinical and operational priorities, in partnership with imaging directors at SH and WCH.
  • Leads, develops and manages the annual operating budget processes for medical imaging and capital planning process at UHN in partnership with SH and WCH.
  • Adopts innovation approaches to achieve cost-effective use of allocated resources and actively creates opportunities for partnerships/collaboration to leverage available resources.
  • Identifies and actively pursues opportunities for revenue generation
  • Understanding of and use of data for complex decision making

Quality Improvement

  • Manages the development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of program/service quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provides leadership development and execution of a Quality Strategic Plan the supports the improvement to patient care processes.
  • Leads key strategic projects to improve the quality and safety of patients across the department.

Radiation Protection and Safety

  • Oversight of X-Ray safety and protection policies and procedures.
  • Manage the radiation protection office resources and staff.

Capital Planning

  • Experience managing large fleets of equipment across multiple sites.
  • Experience in various types of contract management and purchasing agreements.
  • Experience with multi year capital planning.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Maters Degree in Business or Health Care Administration or recognized equivalent required.
  • 8-10 years of practical and related experience required.
  • Experience with equipment and contract management as well as capital equipment renewal is required.
  • RIS renewal/ Radiant experience required.
  • Experience in managing equipment contracts is an asset.
  • PACS renewal experience is an asset.
  • Member of the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario or equivalent
  • In-depth knowledge of business processes.
  • Excellent leadership abilities and communication skills; both verbal and written.
  • Excellent problem recognition and problem solving-skills.
  • Superb organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations.
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner and to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education.
