Relation Therapeutics overview

Relation Therapeutics is a TechBio company pioneering recommender systems biology to bring forward new drugs for patients with diseases of high unmet need.

Relation are combining single-cell profiling, human genetics, functional genomics, and end-to-end machine learning to better understand human biology. The company’s ultimate goal is to transform how drug discovery & development is conducted, leading to new medicines for diseases where there is a tremendous need.

Relation is using graph-based recommender system technologies to reveal causal relationships in diseases that until now have been impossible to understand using traditional technologies. Ultimately, Relation’s platform will be capable of identifying which areas of biology to focus on and greatly accelerates discovery research efforts for diseases that have not previously been widely researched.

At Relation we embrace diversity, equality and inclusion and we are committed to building diverse teams. We are an equal opportunities employer and do not discriminate on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, marital or civil partner status, gender reassignment, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, disability or age. We strive to create an inclusive interdisciplinary workplace that cultivates innovation through collaboration, empowering and supporting everyone to do their best work and develop to their highest potential.

Opportunity

Join our leading-edge machine learning team as a Senior Machine Learning Scientist and play a pivotal role in pioneering machine learning solutions for genetic data interpretation. Our team is at the forefront of developing experimentally validated machine learning methodologies, transforming biobank-scale genetics data (from genotyping arrays to whole genome sequence) into actionable disease risk genes for drug discovery. Leveraging data from external biobanks like the UK Biobank (UKB) and our proprietary Osteomics clinical trial, we're unlocking new frontiers in genetics.

The critical bottleneck in drug discovery remains poor understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying disease. As a result, we often don’t know why patients become sick and many drug candidates fail in trials while numerous patients with devastating diseases remain untreated. Relation delivers a radically different approach that can better understand the biology of disease and rationally discover new therapeutics.

The team you will become part of

As a Senior Machine Learning Scientist at Relation, you'll be an integral part of our interdisciplinary team, collaborating with Data Scientists, Computational Biologists, Machine Learning Engineers, Data Engineers, and experimental scientists. Your role involves driving our strategic priorities in machine learning and contributing to the development of our proprietary technologies. This includes actively participating in the design and execution of cutting-edge machine learning projects, utilising the latest methods, and engineering best practices. Your expertise will span traditional ML methods as well as modern advancements like graph convolutional neural networks, graph attention networks, and transformers. Based at our wet / dry lab and headquarters in central London, you'll tackle the unique challenges presented by our large models and vast datasets.

In the role, you'll leverage your experience from high-performing ML research groups, adhering to our engineering standards and practices. Collaborating with senior group members, you'll engage in basic ML research and establish a presence in the external ML community through publications at major conferences (including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, and AISTATS) and technical blogs. As an established NVIDIA partner and collaborator, we offer access to cutting-edge resources, supporting your efforts to drive innovation and grow.

Joining Relation means becoming part of an exceptionally talented team, gaining a diverse skill set beyond your expertise, contributing to shaping our culture and strategic direction, and, most importantly, making a positive impact on patients' lives.

At Relation we embrace diversity, equality and inclusion and we are committed to building diverse teams. • Actively engage in ML research within the broader community, publishing papers at major conferences and contributing to technical blogs.

  • Stay at the cutting edge of ML research, specialising in chosen subfields like probabilistic/causal ML, graph NNs, and NLP.

Professionally, you have

  • A BSc in machine learning, computer science, or other quantitative discipline; or equivalent industrial experience and preferably a PhD in machine learning, computer science, or another quantitative discipline.

  • Deep expertise in contemporary AI/ML methods and topics, including computer vision, NLP, structured data, probabilistic / causal ML, normalising flows, etc.

  • Experience with biological / health / chemical data

  • A proven track record of excellence in machine learning research including conference papers / presentations at NeurIPS / ICML / ICLR

  • Track record of collaborating successfully with AI engineering teams to deliver complex modelling projects

  • Experience as a proficient Python developer (2 - 5 years of industrial experience); must be familiar with modern software engineering practices and the use of modern collaborative tools (e.g. GitHub, Slack, Jira, Trello, etc.)

  • Experience in at least one major machine learning platform; preferably PyTorch (although TensorFlow is acceptable)

Personally, you are:

  • A great team player

  • A clear communicator

  • Driven by impact

  • Humble and hungry to learn

  • Motivated and curious

  • Passionate about making a difference in patients’ lives
