Job Description

In our quest to harness the potential of plants to feed the world, we are actively seeking a visionary Trait Research Decision Science Lead. Your primary mission is to guide the creation and management of advanced machine learning models, serving as a cornerstone for our internal Seeds Research Traits pipeline. This role involves crafting a seamless data ecosystem that integrates plant and microbial genomics data, expression analysis, and plant phenotype data, significantly enhancing our trait research efforts. As a thought leader, you will collaborate closely with scientists and developers, transforming scientific needs into data-driven strategies. Your role is crucial in the development and maintenance of innovative digital tools and platforms, ensuring they meet the highest scientific standards. Your strategic oversight is vital in making sure that our data-driven decision-making processes are not only scientifically rigorous but also intuitively designed for our internal stakeholders. This approach is essential in fostering collaboration and driving innovation within our research teams, with the ultimate goal of efficiently transitioning superior seeds from the laboratory to the field. This role will work closely with a team of internal experts and engineers, augmented with necessary external developers to build a cutting-edge data-driven decision pipeline.

Accountabilities

  • Lead the strategy and execution for the development of machine learning models and custom applications, ensuring they effectively meet the needs of trait research in terms of scientific accuracy, technical feasibility, and data management.
  • Champion the integration of advanced technologies, including AI, machine learning, data analytics, and digital twin technologies, to innovate and enhance the trait research pipeline.
  • Design and oversee the implementation of pipeline models, sequence databases, and decision-making tools that are tailored to optimize research processes and data interpretation.
  • Collaborate closely with research and development teams to translate scientific requirements into actionable digital strategies and advanced data-driven solutions.
  • Manage the entire lifecycle of digital projects, from roadmap development to model performance monitoring, including budgeting, timeline, resource allocation, and strategy adjustments to align with research objectives.
  • Report on the performance and impact of digital tools and models, and adapt development plans to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with trait research goals.
  • Provide strategic leadership to development teams, connecting the long-term vision to day-to-day execution, and fostering innovation within the trait research domain.

Qualifications

Education:

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science with a specialization in bioinformatics, Genomics, Data Science with a biology focus, or a related scientific field.

Professional Experience and Technical Proficiency:

  • Extensive experience in custom application development and novel decision-making tools within a biological research context.
  • Expertise in advanced machine learning techniques for modeling R&D pipeline decisions is required. Experience in working with sequence databases and the application of digital twins in biological research is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability in creating and managing complex digital solutions that streamline research processes and enhance decision-making.
  • Deep understanding of the latest technologies and methodologies in data science and machine learning as applied to bioinformatics.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale IT projects in a biotech or life sciences research setting.
  • Strong familiarity with agile development methodologies and project management tools.

  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to transform complex biological data into insightful, actionable information.
  • Innovative problem-solving abilities, with a focus on creating solutions that address complex research challenges.

  • Excellent communication capabilities, adept at simplifying and articulating complex bioinformatics and IT topics to various audiences.
