Senior Manager, Data Engineering

Our Mission as EG’s Data Engineering Tooling team is to build the travel industry's premier data platform to delight the users' trips, EG partner experiences through identification, personalization, AI, recommendations, and targeted marketing. We serve the internal Data Engineering and ML communities as well by building platforms that reduce time to market, reduce redundancy and bring consistency and efficiency.


We are looking for a passionate and empathetic engineering leader to help build out components in our Data Platform Engineering ecosystem. As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will be involved in all aspects of software development for your team, including participating in technical designs, implementation, functional analysis, and release for mid-to-large sized projects.  You will also be responsible for on-time delivery of features, setting timelines, coaching/mentoring your team, and hiring.  
 

What you’ll do: 

  • Creatively lead the team to test and maintain software applications and related program supporting scalable and highly-performant distributed systems for processing large volume real-time data 
  • Research and recommend frameworks and architectural/code design patterns for large-scale distributed data processing 
  • Advocate for operational excellence (such as unit testing, establishing SLAs, programming for resiliency and scalability, data quality checks)
  • Anticipate and recognize bottlenecks in work processes between teams and make suggestions for ongoing improvement
  • Determine different phase milestones and priorities in collaboration with product management peers
  • Conduct day-to-day work and solve complex issues in your own specific technical engineering area and enable your team to do so
  • Extend outside of direct organization and collaborate with peers across a senior level organization
  • Gain insight into how customers utilize technology for their competitive advantage and apply this knowledge to suggest areas for improvement
  • Bridge the gap in discussions between technology and nontechnology workforce
  • Review the skill and expertise requirements to accomplish team goals and identify staffing and talent resources to fill project roles
  • Guide employees and managers to develop team and individual goals, providing regular and specific feedback, and assess individual and team performance
  • Craft the culture of your team by building team rituals, processes and practices that build strong team bonds and an open trusting environment where diverse viewpoints, opinions, approaches, candid conversations, and critiques can happen
  • Actively build space for feedback and contribution from the team to improve EG’s data engineering culture and practice 

Who you are: 

  • Bachelor's or Master's in a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience
  • Relevant experience includes: 
  • Recruiting at least 5 data engineers to own team
  • Executed capacity planning/allocation of teams of 10 or more
  • Leading more than 3 multi-quarter data engineering projects
  • Implementation experience with components of distributed data architecture (streaming events, data lakes, distributed data processing, data quality, query engines) 
  • Possess extensive experience in a JVM-based programming language. (e.g. Java, Scala) 
  • Experience in microservice architecture, asynchronous and event based architecture design, and standard methodologies with an eye towards scale
  • Understanding of HTTP and RESTful web services
  • Mentor team members
  • Defining teams’ goals and how they fit a business need across multiple teams working together
  • Delivering solutions to business problems spanning teams
  • Delivering and influencing product roadmap, working in collaboration with product team
  • Skilled in communication, documentation, project management
  • Experience in using or building customer data platform capabilities is a bonus

The total cash range for this position in Austin is $173,000.00 to $242,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $277,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience.  Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
