Hydrosat is a venture-backed space data analytics company developing a new earth observation constellation and software to unlock the power of thermal infrared imagery. Our mission is to capture and deliver thermal infrared data, currently not available from other sources, to provide insights into crop health, drought and wildfire risk, industrial activity, and situational awareness to government and commercial customers.

We are seeking an Imaging Operations Engineer to support the operations of Hydrosat’s earth observation constellation. The team is responsible for operating space imaging payloads, optimizing performance of the imagers, ensuring customer imaging requests are satisfied, and automating these processes wherever possible. This role will appeal to candidates looking to use their engineering skills to impact the world in agriculture, climate, and public safety monitoring applications. The right candidate will be endlessly fascinated by thermal imaging, photography, and space operations.

What you’ll do:

  • Become an expert on the software and system interfaces for Hydrosat imagers and satellite mission operations
  • Collaborate with Imaging System Engineers and CalVal experts to optimize performance of the imagers
  • Operationalize realtime metrics and dashboards to monitor the quality and yield of imagery, payload uptime, telemetry, and QoS indicators
  • Develop and maintain models for imaging performance
  • Design, develop, and test code to automate imaging based on customer requests
  • Collaborate with external partners to ensure spacecraft operations meet service level agreements
  • Maintain and use engineering model imagers as a testbed for operations enhancements and software updates
  • Develop and review operations requirements and interface control documents for future missions
  • Participate in architecture decisions that enable the operationalization of payloads

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • 5+ years of experience in imaging science or space mission operations
  • 5+ years of experience in agile software development with Python
  • Experience with AWS services and modern software engineering tools (Github etc.)
  • Strong first principles thinking and decision making
  • A passion for earth observation and its applications
  • Strong team player with demonstrated ability to take ownership and drive execution
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external teams to deliver capability to users
  • Experience with photography, imaging system calibration, and performance characterization
