The Role:

The Senior Data Operations Engineer will work to address the growing data orchestration and tooling needs of the business. Reporting to the Director of Engineering Operations, you’ll be part of the Engineering Operations team’s tooling vertical, and will be the primary technical contact for all Prefect-related data orchestration and other data tooling. You’ll co-write all cards representing work, making sure they are scoped appropriately and communicated clearly to necessary stakeholders. You will be responsible for the quality of PRs, and will be pivotal in cultivating a practice of extensive review and PR checks across the team. You are also responsible for the quality of Prefect flows and the other tolling systems you will design and implement.

Why You'll Love This Role:

You will have the opportunity to have full involvement in the data engineering cycle for a wide range of applications, from research and design to delivery, for a variety of solutions and implementations. You’ll also have a chance to help shape the emerging machine learning operations within Newsela. You’ll be a key player in helping shape solutions across a diverse set of problems and teams for a fast-growing tech company. Ultimately, your work will drive meaningful enhancements to the learning and teaching experience for students and teachers across the U.S. and help improve the future of K-12 education. And because we're a technology company focused on improving the way students learn, you’ll be part of an engineering culture that values teaching, learning, and questioning.

Why We’ll Love You:

You have 3+ years experience in Data Engineering, ideally with 1-2 years as a lead or senior engineer. You have demonstrated success acting as a technical voice in a full project lifecycle from discovery through delivery. You are adept at modern data architecture, data science engineering, data manipulation of structured and unstructured data using traditional cloud computing technologies. You are comfortable with Python and Prefect and have strong SQL and NoSQL skills. You are a systemic thinker who can visualize a problem space, the data models and structures, data ingestion and computation practices, as well the common pitfalls. You possess a strong understanding of web app and service architecture, with particular understanding of how to track and workflow data through and across systems. You have a keen understanding of deployment systems specific to data systems. While not required, experience with Terraform and R is preferred.
