Machine Learning Engineer - 4640

Brussels (The services shall be performed remotely in Near-site location allowing to reach the Commission premises in Brussels within 2 hours)

VASS, in collaboration with the European Commission's DIGIT.A.4, is seeking a talented Machine Learning Engineer to contribute to the development and maintenance of cutting-edge AI solutions.
As part of the team, you will play a key role in enhancing the quality and functionality of digital reusable solutions for both the Commission and citizens across Member States.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain software applications focusing on Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Train custom machine learning and deep learning models based on structured and unstructured data.
  • Select features, build, and optimize classifiers using machine learning techniques.
  • Improve the quality of machine translation (MT) engines and contribute to long-term strategies for MT quality enhancement.
  • Collaborate with data stewards and IT stakeholders to define data rules and ensure data quality and integrity.
  • Design IT architecture for NLP/ML/AI solutions and coordinate its implementation.
  • Conduct data architecture analysis for consistency, completeness, and accuracy.
  • Write technical documentation and assist with deployment and configuration of systems.
  • Participate in meetings with project teams, user groups, and stakeholders.

Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree or equivalent (Level 7 of the European Qualification Framework) in a related field.
  • Proficiency in Mathematics and Statistics (Linear algebra, Calculus, Probability theory, Optimization techniques, etc.).
  • Expertise in Python programming (knowledge of R is a plus).
  • Extensive experience with libraries/frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and Keras.
  • Hands-on experience with various machine learning algorithms and deep learning techniques.
  • Familiarity with data pre-processing, analysis techniques, and data visualization tools.
  • Knowledge of RDBMS (e.g., Oracle) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
  • Understanding of ethical considerations, bias/fairness issues, and data privacy regulations in AI/ML applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in English (written and oral), knowledge of French is advantageous.
  • Capability to work in a multicultural environment and collaborate effectively in team settings.

Working Conditions:

  • Remote work (Near-site), occasional travel to Brussels may be required.
  • Commission-provided laptop.
  • Security screening by the Commission's security directorate (HR.DS) is mandatory.
