How You Will Make an Impact
At thredUP, every garment we touch is unique, creating a fascinating puzzle of problems across pricing, inventory optimization, and search. In this role, you will work on a broad set of challenging problems within our merchandising science team, from iterating on pricing algorithms and related services, to improving image processing and visual search algorithms. You will play a pivotal role in advancing our ability to leverage inventory to drive business growth, working cross-functionally across marketing, search, browse, personalization, and promotions to maximize inventory value. 

In This Role You'll Get To:

• Explore and implement creative solutions around item acceptance, item pricing, discounting, and clearance strategies for the 4M+ unique items in our inventory
• Design algorithms that price and discount every item that flows through our operations engine
• Uncover insights in our vast repository of raw data, and implement solutions for achieving an inventory assortment that maximizes growth and value for all marketplace participants
• Contribute to algorithms powering search and discovery, allowing buyers to seamlessly find items they love in our vast assortment
• Design, configure, and analyze experiments that maximize the value of our inventory and drive business growth
• Work with other engineers and data scientists to design, code, and deploy data science and machine learning solutions across the product landscape
• Participate in our knowledge-sharing culture by spreading best practices and learnings from prior experiences, helping the entire team level up

What We're Looking For:

• 3 or more years of demonstrated ability as part of a data science, machine learning, or software development team
• Exceptional track record in delivering high-quality engineering and ML solutions and providing technical leadership
• Advanced proficiency Python and proficiency in Java, Scala, or Kotlin
• A keen eye for quality, and experience owning highly available services where accuracy is critical
• Professional experience with deep learning and event-based architecture
• Strong cross-functional communication skills that help push projects forward and encourage the development of new collaborations with business teamsInnate curiosity and drive to find insights that unlock new growth or efficiency - you can’t help but dig in and seek the truth!
• Prior experience working with marketplaces, pricing, or optimization problems is a plus
