About the role
The Principal Analytics Engineer will be joining our Business Intelligence team to define and promote the data-culture at Checkout. You will have the opportunity to provide technical thought-leadership across various domains including Finance, Commercial, Product, Engineering and help teams engage in best practices with data.
Checkout is a fast-growing company. This role is key for helping us navigate rapid growth, advance our automation efforts and define the future landscape of how data is used at Checkout. You will have ownership of the technical direction of the BI team, and you’ll be responsible for the implementation of prototypes, analytics tooling, and the overall architecture of our analytics ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement high-performance, reusable, and scalable data architecture which enable flexible querying and internal reporting.
  • Drive key architectural decisions across BI which will allow us to scale correctly and build a world-class analytics platform.
  • Design and implement Looker structures (explores, views, etc) which will enable users across the organisation to self-serve data and help us decentralise Looker development.
  • Improve our automation efforts and help the teams spend more time working with data and less time validating it.
  • Guide the Analytics Engineering roadmap from a technical standpoint and ensure the right balance between tech debt and project work.
  • Help define, apply and champion data warehouse governance: data quality, testing, documentation, coding best practices and peer reviews.
  • Mentor and train members of the team and help drive their technical development.
  • You will be working with dbt, Looker, Snowflake, Airflow, git, SQL Server, Python, Fivetran and AWS.

About You:

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in business intelligence/data engineering at a fast-paced, growing company.
  • 3+ years of experience using dbt data transformation experience using one of (dbt / airflow / dataflow). 
  • 5+ years of experience using Looker / Tableau / PowerBI.
  • Strong understanding of various data architecture patterns and when they can and should be applied.
  • Excellent SQL and Python knowledge with the ability to write clean and performant code.
  • Strong hands-on data modeling and data warehousing skills.
  • Experience with general-purpose programming and various data structures and serialization methods.
