Who are we?

Founded in Switzerland in 2013, Smallpdf provides a simple, secure, and reliable answer to heavy, awkward PDF software, and has become the most-loved and most trusted PDF software on the planet. We serve over 500 million users in 24 different languages, and in every country in the world—even Antarctica!

As one of the most successful startups in Switzerland, with staff from all over the world, we’re on a mission to make PDF easy. We love open-source and using the latest technologies to scale our distributed application to process millions of files every day.

As a Senior Data Engineer at Smallpdf, you will help us build a connected data infrastructure to power our personalization and recommendation efforts and our marketing automation as well as product and marketing analytics.

What does that mean? We recently implemented a new A/B test tool and we need to ensure that the data is clean, documented, and daily available in our Redshift database.

We also find it important to understand and monitor data quality across our Data Lake and DWH, preferably near real-time and we need experts like you to make this happen. As a team, we discuss trade-offs and implications of new architectures and tools. Could you tell us why Spark should run on EMR or EKS? Are you in favour of trunk-based flow or git-flow? We want to know!

Your responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain the infrastructure required to ingest, process, and serve data in real-time in a robust, flexible, and scalable way.
  • Design, implement, evaluate, and refine data pipelines to ingest, transform, and store data in real-time and batch mode.
  • Collect & structure external data to feed internal services and our product teams to make better data-driven decisions.
  • Develop tools & frameworks to empower and enable Data Science (and future ML teams) in their daily work.
  • Understand how data flows within various systems, ensure data integrity and availability, and organize it properly for reporting and analytics.

Your profile:

  • 3+ years experience in a data engineering role.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Experience with AWS Redshift or a similar cloud data warehouse (such as Google BigQuery or Snowflake).
  • Experience designing and developing Python and SQL based data pipelines and ETLs/ELTs with tools such as dbt, Apache Airflow or Prefect.
  • Experience with real-time data streams using Kafka (or similar tools such as Amazon Kinesis).
  • Experience integrating data from multiple sources, including DBs, product tracking, and APIs.
  • Experience with Linux/OS X command line, version control software (git) and general software development incl. Docker.
  • Taking ownership, willingness to coach and the ability to explain complex terms to business stakeholders.
  • Fluent in English, German is not necessary
  • EU-citizen or a valid work permit to work in Switzerland. (This is an on-site position to be based in Zurich).

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with the setup and operations of BI tools (e.g. Looker, Tableau) and SaaS BI Solutions (Amplitude, Mixpanel, Leanplum, etc.).
  • Experience with designing and operating data lakes with big data tools (in particular Spark).
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (such as Terraform / gitops) and Kubernetes.
