The Opportunity 

The Data Scientist will discover and operationalize insights derived from Freshbooks data in support of marketing, product development and user research. This role will develop the algorithms and data infrastructure necessary to support performance marketing and user personalization.

 

About the Team: 

 

The Data team is responsible for driving the adoption of data driven decision making across FreshBooks - for both our internal users and our global customers of small business owners, bookkeepers and accountants (or whatever better describes our customers). We are the center of expertise for data strategy, data architecture, data modelling, machine learning, ethical data usage and artificial intelligence service design. We lead the effort to raise the data and AI literacy levels across FreshBooks and to embed our commitments to responsible data use into culture and practices across our fast-growing organisation. Data strategy is an emerging specialist group, building global collaborations to define, communicate and drive a cohesive approach to data usage that combines commercialisation, consent, ethics and sustainability. They work with colleagues from diverse backgrounds to drive robust and mature decision making around using data as a commercial asset, aligned to our belief in the primacy of customer consent.

What you’ll do:

  • Model & algorithm development:
    • Build predictive models to optimize marketing strategies.
    • Machine learning to support internal and external product use cases.
  • Solution delivery:
    • Assist marketers in the use of models to optimize campaigns.oBuild dashboards to monitor model and campaign performance.
  • Infrastructure development:
    • Build and maintain standard performance reports on predictive scoring models.
    • Curate datasets from raw sources for analysis, modeling and machine learning.
    • Develop analysis templates and standards for use across the Analytics Team.
  • Research:
    • User behavior research for product teams and business stakeholders.
    • Design product tests to support continuous improvement.
  • Adhere to stringent quality assurance and documentation standards using version control and code repositories (e.g., Git, GitHub, Markdown)
  • Interpret and analyze data problems and guarantee data quality and integrity
  • Responsible for building analytic systems and predictive models as well as experimenting with new models and techniques
  • Ensure that data projects align with organizational goals
  • Utilize data visualization tools to deliver insights to stakeholders.
  • Keep up to date with industry trends and standards and provide guidance and recommendations to the Data Science team and the wider data organization.

 

What you have:

  • 3+ years of experience as an analyst or data scientist supporting business stakeholders
  • Proficiency in the use of SQL, Python and R for data analysis and model development
  • Experience building and shipping predictive models for marketing or product applications
  • Prior experience with Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure
  • Graduate degree in statistics, math or equivalent quantitative field

 

Nice to have:

  • Demonstrated success as an analyst or data scientist at a growing tech company
  • Working knowledge of applied statistics, machine learning or operations research
  • Data pipeline and/or database development experience
