Vinted is Europe’s biggest pre-loved fashion marketplace, with 45 million members in 15 countries. We want to make second-hand the first choice worldwide.
A team of over 1000 people from Vinted’s offices in Vilnius, Berlin, Prague, Amsterdam, and Utrecht develop and support our platform. We share a unique work culture that’s based on aiming high, taking ownership, co-creating, caring, and growth.
Vinted is committed to building an inclusive workplace where people from all walks of life feel a sense of belonging. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, colour, national origin, citizenship, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion/beliefs, disability or age. We truly believe when we can be fully ourselves, we work better.
In order to build relevant search and recommendations, the most crucial thing is to have good insights from data. You'll be working on improving the search data platform to meet company needs: enable data scientists to analyse ever-growing amounts of data (125+ TB of data at the moment, +16B new events per week) and help product teams with heavy data lifting to make our core product even greater.
We are looking for someone who likes to solve problems related to data. As there are many unsolved problems in the domain, we are always on the lookout for new techniques and technologies, we experiment a lot and use unconventional ways to solve problems. Knowledge on how database systems work is a big plus. We value pragmatism, big picture thinking, curiosity and problem solving skills.
We expect you to be familiar with most, and have deep knowledge in at least a few of the following disciplines: Database Systems, Algorithms, Software Engineering, Systems Architecture, Big Data, Systems Scaling, Systems Performance Tuning, Computer Science.
This is a mid / senior level position.
Here are some of the technologies we use: Hadoop HDFS, Apache Spark (for ETL, Streaming, ML and ad-hoc analysis), Apache Kafka (message bus for tracking events and integration with our core product), Cloudera Impala (for run-time metric aggregation, quick ad-hoc querying). For most of the solutions we use Scala, Python and some tiny bit of Ruby.
Currently our data and structuring (or absence of that) is a blocker that impedes fast iteration cycles. As a Search Data Engineer your main responsibility will be to ensure that we are getting the most value from the search data we collect. You'll work with data scientists and machine learning engineers.

In this position, you will:

  • Build a world-class search data platform loved by data scientists, product developers and ML engineers
  • Scale our data engineering team supporting said platform by hiring data engineers, site reliability engineers and engineering leads when required
  • Collaborate closely with Data Science group to bring them continuous improvements and take our data mining capabilities to a new level
  • Work with Privacy, Product, Site Reliability Engineering and Machine Learning groups to understand their needs and requirements for our search data platform and maintain a roadmap to deliver it
  • Make sure that our batch and streaming data pipelines run smoothly and efficiently
  • Optimise data collection, storing and analysis on a large scale
  • Identify improvement opportunities in our search data platform and implement them
  • Work closely with our staff and infrastructure engineers to research, experiment with and implement solutions based on new state of the art technology

About you:

  • Expertise in SRE, DevOps, Lean, TPS, TOC or similar disciplines, paradigms and systems
  • Excellent at communicating in spoken and written English
  • Solid proficiency in communicating with both technical and management levels
  • Able to adapt to changing priorities and requirements
  • Advantage: History of hands on work in development, SRE or analytics
  • Advantage: Experience in working with data
  • Advantage: Experience and understanding of machine learning
  • Willing to learn and master new technologies and concepts
  • Experience building data platforms, preferably Hadoop based
  • Strong programming skills in a statically typed programming language, preferably JVM based (Java, Scala)
  • Scripting skills (bash, python or ruby)
  • Advantage: infrastructure knowledge and skills (Linux, Kubernetes, chef/puppet)
  • Advantage: data analysis skills

Work perks:

  • Opportunity to join our share options programme
  • Learning budget (13.2% from net yearly salary)
  • 25 working days of holiday

  • Home office support (IT workstation equipment provided + a personal budget of up to 540 € for home workplace furniture)
We now use a hybrid workplace model at Vinted. This means that you’ll spend Tuesdays and Wednesdays working from the office, and for the remainder of your time, you’ll be able to choose between either working from home or the office.
The salary range for this position is €4900 - €7200 € (gross) per month.
If this sounds interesting – you may well be just who we need. Apply and we’ll be in touch.
