The Vision 

PLS is building out the life sciences investment industry's best tech-enabled investment platform. This AI and data intelligence platform aims to provide best-in-class intelligence support across all steps of the investment process, from deal sourcing to exit. The system will function as an additional team member and help augment the investment team to make better investments and build better companies for unmet therapeutic needs. Ultimately, PLS, with the support of our data intelligence team, aims to become a data- and scientifically driven investor across the life science ecosystem, from academic spinouts to venture rounds and ultimately to exit. Come be part of our vision! 

 

The role 

We are looking for a senior software engineer generalist with extensive experience in modern data technologies for our expanding global AI and data intelligence team.   

Working closely with investors and scientists, you will: 

  • build technical and scientific products and tools that provide intelligence and predictions from varied and growing datasets 
  • learn what makes a great life sciences company and how investment opportunities are evaluated 
  • work on challenging problems in data processing, text mining, entity resolution, and ranking 
  • build out infrastructure and APIs for user-facing applications, whether for internal teams or portfolio companies 
  • improve investment decision making and have a direct impact on fund performance 

As a senior engineer, you will be a core member of the data intelligence team. The senior engineer will help define the data architecture for our AL-driven investment support systems, create data pipelines integrating many diverse data sources, and implement robust, scalable applications atop our data stack. This is a great opportunity to work on a range of AI and ML projects in a growing team, with exposure to the best life science companies today. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Develop internal- and external-facing software solutions for investment, research, and data teams;  
  • Disciplined and dedicated to building robust code bases, and is passionate about building a culture of software excellence  
  • Work closely with the Investment and Research teams to deeply understand business requirements and translate those to powerful applications for our investment team 
  • Design reliable, scalable, and performant infrastructure, software, and services supporting automation and predictive modelling throughout our data platform 
  • Generate clear and complete documentation on software specifications and design 
  • Architect whole systems and develop Web and API data collection and ingestion services 
  • Build and run data integration pipelines for cleansing, normalization, and merging data 
  • Implement feature engineering and machine learning models for large data sets 
  • Run reports and develop dashboards for KPIs and monitoring 
  • Participate and assist in setting the long-term direction, roadmaps and standards for technical solutions, ensuring they align to the overall enterprise data architecture 
  • Update job knowledge by studying state-of-the-art development tools, programming techniques and computing equipment; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations 
  • Mentor other software engineers by providing advice, coaching and educational opportunities 
  • Grow engineering teams by interviewing, recruiting and hiring 

 

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or similar 
  • 8+ years of experience as a Software Engineer 
  • Strong software engineering generalist.  Extensive expertise in Python. Java and JavaScript experience is a plus. 
  • Familiarity with SQL (Postgres, SQL Server) and no-SQL DBMS (MongoDB), in-memory caches (Redis) 
  • Experience building cloud-Based Data Warehouse and Data Lake solutions 
  • Experience building and supporting user-facing SAAS applications 
  • Knowledge of modern Data Lake file formats (Avro, Parquet, ORC) and data stacks (pandas, Spark, Dask, etc.) 
  • Experience operating in AWS cloud services and environments 
  • Passion for actively learning new skills, techniques, and programming languages/libraries/frameworks 
  • Lead by example on software engineering best practices, code reviews, and communications with technical and non-technical stakeholders 
  • Ability to thrive in an autonomous, fast-paced, startup-style environment  
  • Fluency in English 
  • Authorized to work in the US 
  • Hybrid work schedule: Able to be in San Francisco office, in-person at least 3 days per week, option to work from home 2 days per week  
  • Salary Range: $165k-$240k
