Introduction

Are you a bachelor or master student in Software Engineering or Physics looking for an apprentice internship? Are you skilled in Python? Do you have an affinity with UX design? Would you like to apply your theoretical knowledge in a real world setting and gain some practical experience? Then this apprenticeship might be interesting to you!

Background information

In ASML Delft, we are developing a multi-beam scanning electron microscope (SEM) to find nanometer-sized defects on semiconductor wafers (chips), to be used in a production plant (fab). The SEM operation (SEM behavior) needs to be fully automated across the various use cases, both of normal operation (starting up, taking images, changing settings) and of faulty conditions (danger to human safety or risk of machine damage, guarded by autonomous protection mechanisms). Taking all this into account results in a rather complex SEM behavior, with many states and conditions to keep track of. To effectively design the SEM behavior with fast design cycles, we work on the actual microscope and on an SEM simulator - a virtual copy of the machine. The SEM simulator allows developers and users to “play” through different scenarios, to gain understanding of the SEM workings, and to streamline and debug its behavior.

Your assignment

In this internship you will design and develop a user-friendly, interactive, visual SEM simulator. Hence, this project's focus is on SEM behavior and usability.

Some of your tasks will include:

  • Visualize the microscope state (physical parameters, settings, actuator states);

  • Execute scenarios and trigger autonomous protection mechanisms;

  • Simulate recovery from faulty conditions;

  • Simulate changing SEM settings;

  • Make use of the "SEM physics simulator".

Your profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

  • Are busy with your bachelor or master's in Software Engineering or Physics;

  • Are skilled in Python (C# is a plus);

  • Have affinity with UX design;

  • Are solution oriented and have a hands-on mentality;

  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

This is an apprentice internship for 4-5 days a week with a duration of 5-6 months. The start date is around September.

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.

This position requires access to U.S. controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations. Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such U.S. controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with applicants who are immediately eligible to access U.S. controlled technology.
