Over the past five years, AI for Good Lab has become a data and AI driven solution creator, and trusted advisors working closely with leaders across Microsoft, academia, NGOs, UN agencies and all levels of government. Microsoft is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Partner Research Scientist to join our AI For Good team. As a key member of this dynamic group, you will drive groundbreaking research in artificial intelligence and its application to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges in areas such as health, accessibility, environmental sustainability, and humanitarian action. This position requires a unique blend of deep technical expertise, a passion for making the world a better place, and the ability to work collaboratively both within Microsoft and with external global organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct advanced research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and related fields to develop innovative solutions to complex societal problems.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across Microsoft to integrate AI technologies into products and services.
  • Forge and maintain partnerships with academic, non-profit, and governmental organizations around the world to identify challenges, share insights, and implement solutions.
  • Lead and mentor teams of researchers and engineers in executing high-impact projects.
  • Communicate findings and advocate for the use of AI for social good through academic publications, presentations at conferences, and engagement with the broader scientific community and public.
  • Demonstrate executive presence as an AI expert who can share knowledge with and influence the industry through executive presentations, conferences, panels, white papers, blog posts, etc.
  • Depth of understanding in the latest developments in AI and machine learning, and ensure ethical considerations are central to all research and development activities.
  • Provide strategic input and guidance to Microsoft’s AI For Good initiatives and broader AI strategy.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Mathematics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, or a related field AND 5+ years of experience in AI research, preferably with a focus on applications for social good.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Mathematics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, or a related field AND 10+ years of experience in AI research, preferably with a focus on applications for social good.
  • 7+ years people-management experience.
  • Proven track record of scholarly publications and presentations in top-tier conferences and journals.
  • Solid experience in leading collaborative projects and working with diverse, international teams.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical principles in AI development and application.
  • Experience in working with cloud computing platforms, particularly Azure.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft’s suite of AI tools and technologies.
  • Knowledge of global challenges and experience in humanitarian or non-profit sectors.

Research Sciences M7 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $198,400 - $323,500 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $218,800 - $357,100 per year.
