We help manufacturers improve the quality of life for their workforce while increasing production capacity, and reducing scrap, repair, and rework costs. As a Robotics Engineering Lead, you will join our inaugural Special Projects team onsite in our Gardena, CA office as the first robotics engineer on the team, you will develop end-to-end autonomous solutions for surface finishing and treatment for government, space, and defense projects.

 

Role & Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage multiple customer projects at once in the development of new applications using GrayMatter technologies and solutions, from requirements definition through activation.
  • Create project schedules, scope, and project implementation plans, including risk mitigation.
  • Take ownership of the entire engineering process, from conceptualization and design to prototyping to rigorous system testing and deploying autonomous surface finishing solutions, ensuring alignment with project requirements.
  • Design and develop robust software architectures for autonomous systems, including motion control, trajectory planning, and sensor integration.
  • Before the work cell is deployed, visit the customer and work with the customer to learn about the manufacturing process, including observing the current process, taking measurements, CAD, and process documentation.
  • Make any necessary design modifications on the robot end-of-arm-tool and part fixtures to get parts fabricated, assembled, and tested.
  • Design, implement, and deploy robotic cells, systems, and components
  • Setup and test the work cell suited for customer task requirements which includes the ability to install, troubleshoot, and maintain control components such as proximity sensors, relays, and vacuum ejectors.
  • Create, update and review documentation, manuals, and educational content.

 

Export Control Requirements

In order to comply with the export regulations of the United States Government, it is required that the applicant must fall under one of the following categories: (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident (i.e. current green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • MS degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar/equivalent industry experience.
  • 5+ years of industry experience working with robotics, industrial automation, or cyber-physical systems.
  • 3+ years of experience in working with aerospace and defense contractors, demonstrating knowledge of industry standards and regulations.
  • Programming knowledge in ROS, C++, Python, or other similar languages.
  • 3+ years of experience in sensor integration, metrology, and inspection.
  • Proven track record of solving technical problems effectively, efficiently, and independently.
  • Effective communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25-40% of the time nationwide.
  • Proficiency working with Linux-based systems, systems programming and HW/SW integration.
  • Experience working directly with customers or in customer service environments.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across multiple teams.
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with quickly changing priorities.
  • Must meet export control requirements in the United States and maintain ongoing work authorization beginning at the time of hire through the entirety of employment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years of customer-facing experience with a demonstrated track record of working directly with external parties to create customized solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience with 3D solid modeling, analysis, and development of 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Proven track record of building systems from concept to completion.
  • Familiarity with industrial facilities and equipment.
  • Experience programming robotic manipulators (e.g., FANUC), or other 6+ DOF robotic arms.
  • Experience working in a startup environment.

Compensation for this position includes the base salary range of $125,000 - $155,000 USD plus equity. We also provide comprehensive benefits and perks which include but are not limited to medical, dental, vision, flexible PTO, 401(k) plan + employer match, regular offsite events, a discretionary fund for enhancing productivity and so much more! The range listed on job postings reflect the minimum and maximum new hire salary across levels in Los Angeles, CA.
