Job Description
AECOM is actively seeking an experienced, highly talented Wetland Scientist II (Ecologist II) to report out of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PA); however, we will consider excellent candidates in any existing office location. The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary, team-oriented environment that provides career growth opportunities within AECOM’s Environmental Planning and Permitting (EPP) East Mid-Atlantic Team. This position will include performing environmental field assessments and reporting for wetland/stream delineations, invasive and rare, threatened and endangered species (T&E) surveys, as well as wetland mitigation and/or monitoring. This team primarily works on projects in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Able to develop and/or able to lead ecological teams for stream, wetland, wildlife habitat assessments, and other ecological surveys.
- Post-processing field data, providing legible and detail-oriented notes, and GIS inputs to finalize data from the field to go into ecological reports.
- Originating or leading ecological reports including (aquatic resources, terrestrial habitat assessment, rare flora assessments, and/or avian surveys).
- Preparing Clean Water Act Permits (Section 404/401) in Ohio, Pennsylvania (including General Permits, Small Projects/Environmental Assessments, and Joint Permit applications), and West Virginia.
- Coordination with various governmental agencies regarding ecological surveys and reporting conditions.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental. Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Biology, or related field.
- 2+ years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
- The position requires fieldwork, and the candidate must be able to travel (including overnight).
- Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.
- Due to the nature of work US Citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to lead entry staff in the field or ability to assist with another Ecologist II as a complete field team.
- At least 2 years of assisting wetland delineation/stream assessment or other ecological assessments in the field.
- ORAM, HHEI, QHEI certificate of training or extensive experience/knowledge to lead these assessments in the field.
- 40-hour or equivalent USACE Wetland Certificate and/or Training
- Experience in performing ecological assessments for natural gas, electric utilities and/or renewables industries.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and technical writing.
- Ability to communicate in writing and verbally with regulatory agencies on details related to the project, project impacts to resources, and/or details of field assessments and ecological surveys.
- Experience in multiple states within the mid-Atlantic and eastern United States.
- Driver’s license with trailer certification; boat transportation/maintenance experience.
- Safety training (i.e., OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hours)
- High degree of self-motivation.
- Ability to lead a field or technical team.
- Experience working in a fast-paced consulting environment.
- Excellent communication skills, including both oral and written (writing sample may be required)
- High degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as in collaborative team environment.
- Geographic Information System (GIS) background and/or knowledge
